In 1809, after a survey of the territory of the Val di Cornia, Elisa Bonaparte decided to reopen the alum mines of Montioni, discovered in the fifteenth century but inactive for a long time. She ordered that a village be built near the ancient quarries. Of this ancient village, now called Montioni Nuovo, there are still some buildings which were used as houses, the director’s office, the alum oven, the thermal bath, a cistern and the celebratory stele that can be admired along a signposted path to be visited independently. The day can open or close with a visit to the Rocca Aldobrandesca of Suvereto, whose architecture traces the history of the village, from the noble Aldobrandeschi to the domination of Pisa and the birth of the free Municipality of Suvereto. In the museum housed in the building, historical episodes and founding characters come to life, from the journey of Emperor Arrigo VII to Princess Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, along with the characteristic features of a free and open land of transhumance and wine production.
The village of Suvereto houses one of the few Italian museums dedicated to dolls. The Artistic Museum of Dolls – Micaelli Collection preserves a small and precious heritage that tells the story of Italian manufacturers and materials through the history of fashion – from porcelain to papier-mâché, from wood to celluloid – the secrets of the most beloved toy.
