The Poggio Saracino route

montioni colonna 01

The itinerary of the visit which the Val di Cornia Parks offers visitors illustrates the main aspects of the history and the nature of the Park of Montioni in called the “Poggio Saracino route”. The trip retraces the coexistence of man and nature through the ages, starting from the settlement of Montioni Nuovo, in the heart of the Park, built by the Prince and Princess of Piombino, Felica and Elisa Baciocchi, the sister of Napoleon Bonaparte. Still clearly visible today are the buildings of the Napoleonic period, with open-cast and underground mines, ovens for the baking or the coating of the aluminous stone, and the systems of the transport of the materials.
Continuing along the route, through a dense scrub and evergreen sclerophyllus, in which reddish cork trunks emerge sporadically, devoid of bark, the visitor arrives at the panoramic viewpoint of the “Casa Saracino”, from which we go back down to complete the circuit crossing some of the coal-bunkers, at the reception are of the Park. These were at one time rural buildings, recently renovated and used as a hostel, holiday homes, information point.
Strongly recommended is a visit to the mouth of the ancient alum caves.
